What is the true cost of living for older adults? Participants held a conversation about the Elder Index: a tool that measures the income older people need—every county and state in the country—to meet necessary expenses for housing, health care, food, transportation, and other essentials while staying independent in their own homes. Our expert panel discussed how the Elder Index sheds new light on levels and patterns of economic insecurity experienced in locations throughout the United States and how funders, advocates, and service providers can use the Elder Index on behalf of older people. Speakers included: Grace Egan formerly of New Jersey Foundation for Aging, Len Fishman of Gerontology Institute at UMass Boston, Irene Frye of The Retirement Research Foundation, and Jan Mutchler of Gerontology Institute at UMass Boston.
