It is with pleasure that we invite GIH Funding Partners to join the GIH Food Access and Security Learning Community.
Background
In recent years, many health funders have shifted their health grantmaking strategies to account for and address the social determinants of health. While access to healthy food has long been an issue area for health grantmakers seeking to reduce obesity and its associated chronic illnesses, food security is now viewed as an important upstream factor with far-reaching impacts on health and well-being. This paradigm shift opens new prospects and challenges for health grantmakers as they rethink and recalibrate their philanthropic strategies.
Goal and Objectives
Building on nearly 20 years of healthy eating programming, lessons learned from the GIH HEAL Funder Learning Community, and numerous grantmaker conversations, we are excited to offer this latest opportunity for Funding Partners to learn, connect, and grow.
The goal of this learning community is to create a more intensive and intimate learning and networking experience for GIH Funding Partners with portfolios related to food access and security. The objectives are to:
- discuss various opportunities to address healthy food access and security, as well as the barriers that make the work difficult;
- identify current and emerging strategies for funders;
- share insights on healthy food access and security with the field; and
- provide members with opportunities to expand their professional network and knowledge of the issues.
Plan of Action
A key component of the learning community is convening a consistent cohort of members over a one-year period to facilitate a cohesive learning, community-building, and discussion process. Thus, over the next year, participants must commit to attend three in-person meetings and two conference calls. Additional details are included in the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) document.
How to Join
If you would like to join, please complete and email a signed copy of the MOA to Colin Pekruhn (cpekruhn@gih.org; 202.452.8331) by March 1. Because space is extremely limited, we will only be able to accommodate one person per Funding Partner organization as part of the learning community.
