Blue Shield of California Foundation
Sandra Clarke, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Blue Shield of California, has been appointed to Blue Shield of California Foundation’s board of trustees. Ms. Clarke will join the nine-person board for a three-year term in January, helping oversee the independent nonprofit’s far-reaching vision.
Prior to her role at Blue Shield of California, Ms. Clarke served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Daiichi Sankyo, Inc. She also has served in numerous finance roles at other organizations, including Philips Healthcare, where she was Chief Financial Officer of its North & South America Commercial Group, and Siemens Water Technologies Group as Vice President and Controller of Finance.
Ms. Clarke is a seasoned board member. She currently serves as Chair of the board of trustees of the Plan Investment Fund, a money market mutual fund for Blue Cross Blue Shield companies and affiliates, and as Chair of the board of Evio. She is also a member of the board for the Blue Venture Fund, which invests in venture and growth opportunities within healthcare technology, health care services, and clinical sciences. In addition, Ms. Clarke serves in leadership roles for Metromile, the San Francisco Chapter of the CFO Leadership Council, and Financial Women of San Francisco.
Ms. Clarke will take the place of Gary Cohen, who retired in December after serving as Vice President of Government Affairs at Blue Shield of California. Current board of trustees Chair Evelyn Dilsaver’s term ends in December. Upon her departure, Kim Belshé will become the board chair and Ray Baxter will become chair-elect.

Dr. Gary Nelson
Healthcare Georgia Foundation
After twenty years of serving as Healthcare Georgia Foundation’s (HGF) President, Dr. Gary Nelson will retire in the spring of 2022. The foundation has engaged with an executive search firm, WittKieffer, to identify its next President. HGF is seeking a collaborative, equity-minded leader to continue to drive and advance its mission of health equity for all Georgians.
Reporting directly to HGF’s board of directors, the President will provide executive oversight and management of the foundation’s operations and serve as the voice and face of HGF. As HGF enters the latter stages of its strategic plan, this executive must ensure completion of the plan while also reviewing the foundation’s performance and outcomes. After performing a thorough assessment of the operations, the President will work in collaboration with the board of directors and senior staff to develop and implement HGF’s new strategic plan. The President will be an innovative, visionary leader able to further the mission by addressing the social determinants of health and health care disparities across the state. Other major priorities for the President include partnering with the diversity committee of the board of directors to develop and implement the foundation’s diversity strategy; assessing the staff and identifying opportunities for future growth and development; evaluating the organizational structure for future alignment; and identifying opportunities to elevate the foundation’s visibility and impact across the state.
Candidates should have a minimum of seven years of experience managing a team and a budget. The ideal candidate will be a transparent, authentic leader with a passion for serving vulnerable and underserved populations. This leader will be a visionary who inspires and collaborates with others. The President will be a highly effective communicator and people manager. This leader must be comfortable in public settings and able to successfully navigate complex political and social landscapes. The ideal candidate will have strong business and financial acumen and be driven by the mission of HGF.
