The Affordable Care Act (ACA) establishes new community benefit requirements for tax-exempt hospitals and creates meaningful incentives for collaborative efforts to improve community health. This audioconference clarified the ACA’s hospital community benefit provisions, including requirements for hospital-sponsored Community Health Needs Assessments, and examined the promise (and potential pitfalls) of leveraging these rules to promote investments in community health. The discussion emphasized the critical role philanthropy can play in developing productive partnerships with hospitals and ensuring that the potential benefits of this important policy change are fully realized. Speakers included: Abbey Cofsky of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Gary Cohen of Health Care Without Harm, Jessica Curtis of Community Catalyst, Chris Kabel of the Kresge Foundation, and Kim VanPelt of St. Luke’s Health Initiatives.
