The Fall Forum is GIH’s annual gathering for funders interested in health policy. The 2013 agenda included Foundations and Health Reform, the inaugural Lauren LeRoy Health Policy Lecture featuring Uwe E. Reinhardt, and the strategy session Engaging the Public to Advance Policy Change.
FOUNDATIONS AND HEALTH REFORM

Enrolling the uninsured in new coverage opportunities, developing a health workforce that is prepared to meet the needs of millions of newly insured Americans, and ensuring that an adequate safety net remains for those who are still uninsured are the latest challenges in health reform implementation and the focus of many health funders. At the fourth annual Foundations and Health Reform meeting, grantmakers engaged in a dialogue with each other and with those on the front lines of implementation and policymaking. Attendees examined issues in small group discussions and shared insights about successful foundation-funded work; explored potential collaborations with government, academia, and the health sector; and networked with colleagues and experts in the field. LAUREN LEROY HEALTH POLICY LECTURE

While president and CEO at GIH, Lauren LeRoy was known for her strong commitment to increasing communication between the worlds of philanthropy and policy. On her retirement from the organization in 2012, the GIH Board of Directors established the Lauren LeRoy Health Policy Lecture Series as a lasting tribute to this commitment.
The inaugural Lauren LeRoy Health Policy Lecture featured Uwe E. Reinhardt, James Madison Professor of Political Economy and Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. Regarded as one of the nation’s leading experts on health care economics, Dr. Reinhardt informed, challenged, and inspired grantmakers to examine health and health care in the United States at a deeper level and from different perspectives.

ENGAGING THE PUBLIC TO ADVANCE POLICY CHANGE

Policy change often depends on the active, engaged participation of community members. Foundation efforts to encourage and support public involvement in health policy decisionmaking can take a variety of forms, including grassroots advocacy, community organizing, civic engagement, voter registration, outreach and enrollment, public will building, and public education. The nature and intent of these activities vary, but all share common challenges related to effective communications, relationship building, and community empowerment. At this fully-booked and highly interactive strategy session health funders explored these challenges by boosting innovative investments related to information technology, social media applications, and nontraditional partnerships.
