Providing care for older adults with chronic, disabling health conditions has entered a new chapter, one with far-ranging implications for families, communities, health care, and even the economy. Whether it is the 35 million Americans who are family caregivers or the 2 million professional home health care workers who are often underpaid women of color, the current system does not adequately support the needs of those routinely providing extensive help with daily activities, delivering complex medically-related services, and coordinating health care and long-term services and supports. While there are a number of policy efforts and initiatives aimed at addressing the needs of caregivers and the ones they provide care for, there is a great deal of work yet to be done. Philanthropy can play a critical role in driving solutions that affect nearly everyone in the communities they serve, especially those who are most vulnerable and in need.
Grantmakers In Health (GIH) and Grantmakers In Aging (GIA) hosted a strategic conversation that focused on how philanthropy can work with both the public and private sectors to meet the needs of caregivers, older adults, and the communities they work and live in.
Care for All: Supporting Older Adults, Family Caregivers, and the Home Health Care Workforce took place on Monday, July 18, 2016 in New York, New York, at Philanthropy New York.
