Funder Briefing and Conversation: USDA Summer Meals 2024
December 7, 2:00 PM Eastern
More than 30 million children participate in school meal programs during the school year. However, when schools are closed, children lose access to these healthy meals and are at higher risk of food and nutrition insecurity. As a result, for many children, summer is the hungriest time of the year. Fortunately, due to new bi-partisan legislation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has two new powerful tools—non-congregate summer feeding in certain rural areas and Summer EBT—to ensure every child gets the nourishment they need when school is out of session. Leaders from the field convened for a special funder briefing with opening remarks from Cindy Long, Administrator of Food and Nutrition Service, USDA, to learn more about these new programs and to discuss how philanthropy can play a pivotal role in partnering with USDA to reduce childhood hunger during the summer months. Additional speakers included Alberto González, Jr., Senior Advisor for External Engagement, Food and Nutrition Service, USDA.
