Investing in Inclusion: The LGBTQ+ Community & the Census
Thursday, June 13, 2024
Cosponsored with Census Equity Initiative
Participants learned about how key gaps in federal data collection have left advocates, policymakers, researchers, and others without critical insights into disparities, opportunities, and the effectiveness of interventions designed to advance equity for LGBTQ people.
During the briefing, we learned that 2024 marks a historic moment in the movement: for the first time ever, the Census Bureau will test questions that allow LGBTQ people to identify themselves on the American Community Survey (ACS), the premier source of social, economic, housing, and demographic data on the nation’s population. Now is the time for funders to support national and state partners who are working to ensure the needs of LGBTQ communities are better understood in government programs, policies, funding investments, and enforcement of civil rights laws.
Learn more about this work, the opportunities for funders to get involved, and what success would mean for LGBTQ communities. This briefing was open to funders, philanthropy serving organizations, and other philanthropic partners.
