Investing in Opportunities and Assets: Lessons from the South for the Nation

How is the South building on opportunities and assets to promote the health of vulnerable families and communities? How does the political, economic, and social environment influence health and well-being in the South? What is the role of health philanthropy in building and supporting infrastructure to meet the needs of Southern U.S. communities? What are the lessons of the South for the nation?

Grantmakers In Health convened Investing in Opportunities and Assets: Lessons from the South for the Nation in New Orleans, Louisiana, to explore these questions. Sponsored by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, this working session was designed to explore key approaches for building the capacity of the nonprofit sector to promote the health of vulnerable communities in the South. Additionally, participants heard from nonprofit advocacy and direct-service organizations from across the Southern states regarding challenges and opportunities they experience.
