Blue Shield of California Foundation is exclusively funded by yearly contributions from Blue Shield of California and operates as an independent organization and 501c3. The Foundation is committed to supporting the people and programs working on the frontlines of health and domestic violence. Its mission is to build lasting and equitable solutions that make California the healthiest state and end domestic violence.
The Foundation supports underserved individuals and communities across California who face difficult economic, social, or cultural circumstances that prevent them from receiving or having access to high-quality health care and other needed services, as well as those who have experienced violence or trauma that stymies their ability to thrive. It provides grants to organizations and programs in nearly every county in California.
Program Information: Blue Shield of California Foundation’s grantmaking is currently centered around three priorities: breaking the cycle of domestic violence that impacts the health and safety of California communities and that of future generations; enabling multi-sector collaboration to more effectively respond to and prevent the many factors that lead to poor health and influence individual well-being; and exploring new approaches to create a health care system that meets the needs of all people, particularly the most vulnerable.

- Special Initiatives and/or Representative Health and Human Services Grants:
California Accountable Communities for Health Initiative—to support cross-sector collaborations for 15 sites throughout the state in effort to transform and improve the way that we address critical community health issues such as such as reducing cardiovascular disease, asthma, and community violence and trauma. ($2 million)Public Health Institute—to advance community-level approaches to health and domestic violence by engaging state government agencies that work in a broad range of fields including education, social services, corrections, housing, public health, criminal justice, and other sectors. ($450,000) Immigrant Legal Resource Center—to provide urgent response funding for organizations engaged in defending the safety and well-being of vulnerable populations and ensure that immigrant families know their rights and continue to have access to needed services. ($200,000)
PolicyLink—to mobilize networks of men and boys of color to help prevent domestic abuse and identify culturally-rooted approaches to addressing trauma and promoting community healing and resilience. ($450,000)
Gobee Group—to support the “Reimagine Lab,” a fellowship program that connects leaders from diverse backgrounds and sectors to co-create promising solutions to interrupt the cycle of domestic violence. ($803,505)
