During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Healthy Food Community of Practice doubled down on its efforts to bring nonprofits together and helped them build lasting relationships, collaborate in new ways, and innovate around shared challenges.
Policy Briefing: Threats to Food and Nutrition Programs in Budget Reconciliation
The House and Senate continue to work on a budget reconciliation. On April 10, the House narrowly passed the Senate’s version of a budget blueprint, calling on Congressional committees to slash billions of dollars from programs within their jurisdictions including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), school meal supports like the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), and Medicaid in exchange for tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy. The House and Senate will determine the final tax and spending levels by agency and program in committee debates in coming months. In this session, experts from the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) will provide an up to the moment analysis of how federal budget reconciliation impacts food and nutrition programs, the tie into Farm Bill negotiations, and ultimately, what these policy decisions mean for the health and well-being of children, families, and communities across the country. Experts will also highlight how advocates are organizing in support of these crucial programs, FRAC’s advocacy resources, and how funders can support this work. The National Peanut Board: April 2025
The National Peanut Board (NPB) is accepting inquiries for its second annual request for proposals (RFP) for food allergy research grants. The call for applications is open through May 9, 2025. This year, NPB has increased the total availability of grant funding up to $550,000, which will be awarded to qualified projects designed to advance food allergy solutions.

‘Digging In’ to Create a Healthy Agriculture System
Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Funders (SAFSF), a Grantmakers In Health (GIH) Philanthropy Support Partner, recently released their first documentary film, Digging In, in partnership with Masika Henson, Nathan.works, and Vatheuer Family Foundation. The documentary aims to help funders understand how land access, consolidation, and climate change affect U.S. agriculture, which are all factors that impact health and equity. Case Study Examines Early Learnings in Using Medicaid Payments for Food is Medicine
A new resource commissioned by the Fair Food Network examines the early learnings from the Healthy Opportunities Pilots effort in North Carolina to use federal 1115 Medicaid Demonstration Waiver funding to scale and sustain community-based implementation of a combination of produce prescription programs, medically tailored meal programs, and nutrition education.
It’s Time to Move: Physical Activity as Medicine
Participants learned of the current achievements and milestones, the important next steps, and opportunities for philanthropy to lead the effort to integrate physical activity into America’s healthcare system.
