April 2018

A few weeks ago, I was the moderator for a conversation about “Building, Protecting, and Promoting Evidence to Achieve Health Equity,” between Rich Besser of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and Bob Ross of The California Endowment. The foundations share a commitment to health equity, but their approaches to achieving it vary in interesting ways.

For funders seeking to make evidence-based investments, understanding what we know and do not know from existing research is an important first step. Between 2015 and 2017, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation commissioned AcademyHealth, the professional society for health services research, and its Translation and Dissemination Institute, to develop and test a “rapid evidence review” process that could meet the needs of decisionmakers for fast, low-cost, but rigorous syntheses of evidence about health-related services and programs.

Historically, philanthropy at its best has been the engine of social change. At the George Family Foundation, we strive to be the “wind beneath the wings” of those who are boldly leading the organizations and programs that are making a difference by working for greater health and well-being for all people.
