March 2020
|
Current events are a reminder of how much our world is changing, and how essential it is that we come together to achieve better health at home and around the world. As I am settling into my new role, my top priorities are to ensure the health and safety of my GIH colleagues and provide support for the many organizations that make up the field of health philanthropy during this challenging time. |

GIH staff will be telecommuting beginning today, Tuesday, March 17, 2020. We expect no disruption in programming or functioning, and our staff members remain available and committed to supporting each of you in your work.
GIH has made the difficult decision to postpone our April meetings, Birthing a New Reality: Ending Maternal and Child Health Disparities in the United States and Funding Equity: Assessing the Journey. Stay tuned for a rescheduled date.
We are still planning to hold the GIH Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy from June 17-19 in Minneapolis. We continue to monitor reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization, and will inform the field if our plans change.

While opioids are at the forefront of our country’s drug policy discourse, they are not the only drug devastating communities, nor will they be the last without sustained, coordinated action. Philanthropy is uniquely suited
to respond to immediate challenges while also supporting broader systems change.

As elections approach, foundations across the country are considering how to best raise awareness of issues ranging from health equity and climate change to immigration reform and criminal justice.Health foundations
tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code—which includes both private foundations and community foundations—must comply with IRS rules requiring 501(c)(3) organizations to remain nonpartisan.

“We believe that the health of individuals is a product of the health of communities. Therefore, we believe that the communities we serve are more important than our foundation—their needs are more important than ours; their
information and ideas are better than ours; they are more deserving of recognition and praise; their time is more valuable than ours. For these reasons, we aim to give our partners maximum flexibility, time, opportunity,
connections, advocacy, and support so that together we can learn and lift up the solutions that will change society for the better.”
