October 2023
|
Grantmakers In Health began 2023 by announcing an ambitious set of health policy priorities
supporting four key goals—to advance health equity and social justice, to expand health care
access and improve quality of care, to improve population health, and to promote community
engagement and empowerment. Throughout the year, we aligned our work with our policy
agenda, which was reflected in much of the programming at the 2023 GIH Annual Conference
in Minneapolis, in our recent position statement on the 2023 Farm Bill, and in much of our
other programming. Next week’s Fall Forum in Washington, DC, furthers GIH’s policy agenda,
serving as a springboard for our continued engagement on policy in 2024.

Lessons from an Equity Toolkit Workshop: Facilitator Perspective on Participatory Engagement
Blue Shield of California Foundation and Cristobal Consulting
The Blue Shield of California Foundation is a long-time multisector collaborative funder with a health equity focus. Increasingly, we find that multisector collaboratives are a powerful vehicle to change systems toward racial equity. We heard from our partners and grantees a strong need for tools and resources that provide several outcomes: to establish equity at the collaborative level, to outline an arc of learning to help place a collaborative on an equity spectrum, and to provide tools to help collaboratives move deeper into equity. To support this work, the Equity in Collaboration Toolkit was developed in partnership with Cristobal Consulting. Its goal is to help multisector collaboratives see where they are taking concrete actions to center equity—and where they are not—through an embedded equity assessment.an embedded equity assessment.

Q&A: Bringing an Australian Perspective to American Health Philanthropy
Lauren Monaghan, Health Program Manager, The Ian Potter Foundation
Interviewer: Miranda Wesley, Communications Specialist, Grantmakers In Health
Traveling thousands of miles from Melbourne to Minneapolis, Lauren Monaghan of The Ian Potter Foundation attended the 2023 GIH Annual Conference on Health Philanthropy to learn more about the American public health philanthropy sector at the country's largest gathering of health funders. Founded in 1964, The Ian Potter Foundation has a vision of a fair, healthy, sustainable, and vibrant Australia. This vision informs the four main pillars of the foundation's funding. Lauren Monaghan serves as Program Manager of the health pillar, which focuses on public health and medical research. What can the American philanthropic community learn from our colleagues in Australia, and vice versa? To delve into the differences and similarities, Grantmakers In Health’s Miranda Wesley spoke with Monaghan to discuss health philanthropy in Australia versus the US and Monaghan’s key takeaways from the GIH Annual Conference.

National Rural Health Day Provides an Opportunity for Philanthropy to Engage and Support Underserved Communities
Tom Morris, Associate Administrator for Rural Health Policy, Health Resources and Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
For anyone with an interest in rural health, clear your calendar on November 16th and help celebrate National Rural Health Day, a day to celebrate and lift up the work of doctors, nurses, clinics, hospitals, and other stakeholders working in our rural communities. For the 12th year in row, falling on the third Thursday of November, the observance features the opportunity to talk about how rural communities—often against the odds—find ways to help the 61 million Americans living in rural America get the health services they need.

“The approach for Black Women Thriving is imperative now because we haven't seen the disparities reduce over time. And in fact, the disparities are increasing. Black women are the core of the community. They're the decisionmakers in their families, and the caretakers in the community. Finding the best approach to lift up their lives and their voice, improve their health outcomes and economic mobility, will have an economic and social benefit across communities. So, it's something that we must do, and we can't ignore any longer.”

|
Grantmakers In Aging (GIA) and Grantmakers In Health (GIH) are pleased to announce a new collaboration aimed at mobilizing funders in support of the 2024 reauthorization of the Older Americans Act (OAA).
This is a critical opportunity for funders to address common priority issues affecting all of us as we age, including mental health and well-being, social connection, and the care workforce. Through this unique collaboration, GIA and GIH hope to advance equity and eliminate disparities in aging, better align public and private resources, identify bipartisan solutions, and increase funding to meet the growing needs of older people.

2023 Survey Summary: Climate Change Strategies
|
Climate change is affecting individual and community health in a multitude of ways, with climate-related disasters, displacement, and disparities only anticipated to increase. Climate change is also an urgent health equity issue given low-income communities and communities of color are disproportionately burdened by the health and economic impacts of climate change.
This infographic summarizes the responses to a Grantmakers In Health funder survey, conducted in May and June 2023, on how philanthropy is addressing climate change, and the barriers and opportunities that exist to support climate-related efforts. Support for this poll was provided by a grant from the Kresge Foundation.
