Advancing Health Equity and Fostering Collaboration through Black Maternal and Child Health Initiatives

Bridging the Gap: How Philanthropy Can Help Public Agencies to Engage Equitably with Underserved Communities
Karen Ben-Moshe, Policy Program Officer, Blue Shield of California Foundation
Richard Vezina, Senior Program Officer, Blue Shield of California Foundation
Local public agencies are at a crossroads. Over the last few years, in response to racial justice protests and inequities made more visible by the Covid-19 pandemic, many local public agencies have worked to improve their engagement with low-income and underserved communities—especially communities of color. By adopting equity-centered approaches to community engagement, public agencies can better ensure their policies and programs lead to improvements for communities facing disproportionate health burdens.

Wanda Castillo, Community Leader
Kim Firth, Program Director, Endowment for Health
Sandra Pratt, Community Leader
Fionn Shea, Communications Associate, Endowment for Health

Research in this movement is paving the way for greater equity in family services, services like early care, education, and health care. All families should have access to these services. Developing an Equitable Nonprofit Ecosystem: A New Funding Framework for Emerging, BIPOC-Led Grantees
Jelissa Parham, Executive Director, John Muir Community Health Fund
In philanthropy, it is standard due diligence practice to vet potential grantees on their list of current, past, and future funders as a way to mitigate our perceived risk. However, this approach can put many emerging, grassroots, and BIPOC-led organizations out of contention for initial funding. The John Muir Community Health Fund has shifted the way we fundamentally see risk, and instead, have embraced the opportunity to fund emerging organizations that address social determinants of health by providing monetary support, capacity building, and ultimately a proof of concept that propels grantees to long-term sustainability.

“At Stanford Medicine Children’s Health, we’re committed to improving lives beyond our hospital walls. We focus on all aspects of health—physical, mental, and economic. We know many families struggle with access to care, economic instability, and behavioral health issues, including disparities in maternal and infant health. 2024 Rural Health Philanthropy Partnership Meeting
|
Grantmakers In Health, the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy, the National Rural Health Association, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Office of Rural Health are excited to convene the next annual Rural Health Philanthropy Partnership Meeting, welcoming foundations, federal entities, and other partners to discuss how our combined efforts might produce better health outcomes for rural communities. Join us Thursday, October 24 through Friday, October 25, 2024, at the Marriott Bethesda Downtown.
These yearly meetings are intended for foundations, corporate giving programs, and individual donors who have activities or programs dedicated to rural health care. Participants will have the opportunity to connect with one another, share ideas, and discuss how combined efforts can produce better outcomes for rural communities. As with previous gatherings, participants will hear from speakers from government agencies and other rural health leaders, network with peers, and learn about ongoing engagements occurring throughout rural America.
Our theme this year is Thinking Anew: Innovative Approaches to Advance Rural Health. Various speaker panels will feature funders and stakeholders focusing on rural leadership development, capacity building, community engagement, and innovation. As in the past, there will be ample time for networking built in, as well as the always popular Federal Roundtables.
